LGBT+ History Month

February marks LGBT+ History Month which focuses on the lives and achievements of the LGBT+ community. This year’s theme was ‘Activism and Social Change’.

In school, our LGBT+ Champion is Miss Killey who leads our LGBT+ awareness and inclusion all year round; tying everything we do into our school values of kindness, respect and nurture.

Proud Trust workshops

Members of charity Proud Trust came in to deliver workshops across the school. The Proud Trust is an LGBT+ youth charity empowering LGBT+ young people to be proud of who they are. The workshops were interactive and discussion based, exploring gender and sexual orientation with young people and introducing appropriate terminology for a range of LGBT+ identities. They also discussed ‘LGBTphobia’ and affirmed the responsibility of everyone to recognise and challenge it, as well as creating safe and inclusive spaces.

Merseyside Police - LGBT+ and hate crime

PC Laura Currie and her colleague from the Merseyside Police Community Engagement Team joined us for a full day of workshops surrounding LGBT+ and hate crime. The topic was a trigger for powerful discussions throughout the pupil body and offered a candid understanding of what it means to commit, witness or contribute to hate crime and what actions it covers. Each session was tailored to the appropriate year group and linked closely to our ongoing work on protected characteristics.

Pupils were mature and asked mindful questions to our visitors and Miss Killey noted, “a vast majority of pupils represented the school wonderfully and showed kindness, respect and support for equality. The more we speak about LGBT+ and protected characteristics in school, the more opportunities we have to teach and challenge our pupils to hopefully pave a better way forward”.

Teaching pupils about LGBT+ History Month is an invaluable way to continue fostering inclusivity and acceptance throughout the school community. Whilst recognising accomplishments, it also promotes visibility, educates, reflects on challenges and encourages a better future.
